The Garlic Group is a casual Cantonese drop-in conversation and learning space that is open to heritage and non-heritage students of Cantonese, patient native speakers, and those who are rebuilding or reinforcing existing foundations in the language.

The first hour of the evening is more suited for those with a lower conversational comfort level, as we make copious use of the whiteboard for vocabulary and explanations, field questions about pronunciation and phrases, and anything else learners may bring with them.
 
The second hour of the evening is focused more on conversing in Cantonese. We ask that attendees try their best to use as much Cantonese as is comfortable. Questions, however, are always welcomed!
 
Please note that when we use the word "Cantonese," we are referring broadly to the family of languages spoken throughout Southern China, Hong Kong and the diaspora. Dialect differences are respected and encouraged.
